Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) is proud to be the only national charity in Canada dedicated solely to overcoming ovarian cancer.
Together, through the Tree of Life, Shoppers Drug Mart customers, employees and Pharmacist-owners have raised more than $490,000 for support, education and awareness programs for women with ovarian cancer, their families, health professionals and the general public.
Thanks to your support, OCC is able to bring these programs to communities across Canada:
Each year, Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) brings survivors and families living with ovarian cancer together with leading researchers, doctors and health professionals to learn how to be their own best advocates for their health. With support from Shoppers Drug Mart, OCC has held 25 of these educational symposia across Canada, affecting 2,100 lives.
When treatment ends, survivors of ovarian cancer often find themselves lost as their journey to a ‘new normal’ begins. Picking Up the Pieces workshops help survivors move through recovery once their cancer treatments have ended.
Workshop facilitator and acclaimed author, Dr. Sherri Magee, explains it best: “There is no right or wrong way to recover – it’s about finding your own way through.” To date, symposia have taken place in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, London, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria, affecting 135 lives.
Listen to the Whispers (LTW) teaches well-women about the symptoms of ovarian cancer and how family history can play a role in the disease.
LTW is delivered nation-wide by volunteers and survivors of ovarian cancer.
Annually, more than 200 LTW presentations are given to women across the country – audiences range from intimate groups of friends, family and community members to corporations and professional health forums.
A new education program brings survivors of ovarian cancer into nursing and medical school classrooms to teach future health care providers about the disease. Called Survivors Teaching Students, it has already been rolled out to more than 450 students across Newfoundland, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Evaluations of the program show that the survivors’ stories change the way students think about ovarian cancer. As one student reflected: “This will make me more aware of some of the ways in which ovarian cancer can present – and realize the importance on following up on vague symptoms.”
Shoppers continues to raise awareness and funds to overcome ovarian cancer through unique in-store promotions.
For example, QUO lipstick and Roots helped to raise more than $40,000 for OCC through sales of a unique QUO lipstick and Roots Kiss tee promotion. OCC sends a special thanks to all Shoppers ‘fashionistas’ who continue to help this organization turn up the volume on ovarian cancer!
