Not quite sure what all the latest beauty lingo means?
Check out our glossary of beauty buzz words that can help you better understand the products you buy and what’s so good about them.

AHA (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids)
Derived from fruit and milk sugars, Alpha-Hydroxy Acids work mainly as an exfoliant to slough off dead skin cells and reveal the smoother, more youthful skin underneath. Examples of AHAs include Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants help to protect the skin from damage caused by harmful free radicals that can destroy skin cells. Ingredients like Vitamin C, A, and E are examples of antioxidants.

Free radicals
Free radicals can accelerate the aging process by slowing down the body's ability to regenerate and repair itself.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation that removes the uppermost layer of dead skin cells, helping to diminish the signs of aging and sun damage for a smoother texture and a fresh, glowing complexion.

Non-comedogenic
Products that are non-comedogenic are shown to be less likely to clog pores.

Photoaging
Caused by excessive sun exposure on the skin without the protection of sunscreen, photoaging can leave the skin thick and leathery with dark age spots, wrinkles, fine lines and an uneven complexion.

Retinol
Made from Vitamin A, Retinol is a powerful antioxidant and can dramatically reduce skin damage from ultraviolet rays.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
SPF measures the time it takes for your skin to burn, compared with unprotected skin. For example, if your skin becomes sunburned within ½ hour without any sunscreen, applying a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15 would allow you to stay in the sun for 15 times longer before you get sunburned. Using SPF is critical to maintaining healthy skin while in the sun as it screens out harmful ultraviolet rays that can age and damage the skin.

 How often should I exfoliate?

This answer depends entirely upon your skin type. For example, mildly sensitive and normal skin types should exfoliate once a week with a gentle exfoliator such as RoC’s non-irritating, gentle exfoliating cream whereas mature skin types should exfoliate two to three times per week with a stimulating exfoliator such as RoC’s Microdermabrasion system. Your Beauty Expert can help you determine the how often you should exfoliate for best results.

Should I use a moisturizer if I have oily skin?

Absolutely. The misconception is that moisturizer will make the skin look oilier. In fact, it is very important to adopt a proper daily skin care ritual. Start by properly cleaning the skin twice a day to remove the excess sebum, pollution and make-up. After cleansing, use a non-comedogenic product that will regulate sebum secretion, thereby reducing the chances of imperfections. The product texture should be light weight and non-greasy.

We suggest Vichy’s Normaderm line. This system of products works together to control excess sebum, reduce blemishes and give a refined surface texture.

How do I know if I have rosacea?

Symptoms of rosacea include: flushes, persistent redness, visible little blood vessels, and inflammatory rosacea (red pimples in the center of the face). Skin is sensitive, but more specifically delicate and reactive with fragile blood vessels. It will also tend to over-react to virtually everything: emotions, alcohol, temperature changes, spicy food, sun, etc.

Advice for dealing with reactive skin:

1. Protect yourself from climatic changes
2. Watch what you eat and drink
3. Adopt a suitable skin care routine

La Roche Posay offers a complete program for reactive skin prone to redness. ROSALIAC skin perfecting anti-redness cleansing gel and moisturizer can be used daily to bring back comfort, and to soothe and neutralize the focus of redness.

What’s the best way to treat ecxema?

Characterized by recurring itching skin and dryness, eczema is a form of inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. Eczema is very frequent in Canada especially during winter when the skin is exposed to cold temperatures, wind, as well as decreased humidity indoors when the heat is turned on. Long hot water showers or baths might also trigger eczema rashes.

Dermatologists agree on a very simple treatment: use a rich moisturizer daily and try lukewarm showers or baths. According to Dr. Charles Lynde, Dermatologist at the Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, LIPIKAR Balm by La Roche-Posay is an excellent choice to replenish the skin on a continual basis. LIPIKAR Balm is anti-irritating, fragrance free, paraben free and safe for use on both adults and children suffering from eczema.

What should I look for in a psoriasis shampoo?

Psoriasis on the scalp is a condition consisting of red patches covered with sticky scales. When psoriasis occurs, you need to use a shampoo that not only eliminates these scales, but also prevents their recurrence and soothes redness. Make sure that your choice of shampoo respects the highest requirements for tolerance: a scalp with psoriasis becomes very fragile and can be irritated by some shampoos. If the condition persists, it is recommended to consult a Dermatologist. Our recommendation: Kertyol S shampoo (Ducray Dermatological Laboratories).

Should I change my skin care regimen based on the season?

Definitely. The skin is your most vital organ and it is always changing. The weather change and daily living conditions (dry indoor heating, or air conditioning) will definitely affect the skin, and require you to change your daily routine depending on your skin’s needs. As the season changes, it is a good idea to visit your Beauty Expert who will identify your unique skin care needs and provide a smart solution.

How do I know which sunscreen is right for me?

When looking for sunscreen, be sure that the sun protection factor (SPF) is adapted to your phototype. For example, if you are a phototype 1: red hair, fair skin and always gets sunburn, you will need a higher protection than a type IV that has a darker complexion. You should also consider the exposure conditions: altitude, the season (in the summer UV rays are 100 times stronger than winter) and time (peak intensity is between 11 am and 4 pm). Avène offers a range of sun care products. Ask your Beauty Expert to help you choose the ideal product.
